I am once again in the podcasting chair, interchanging with Guest Hosts for the next couple of episodes. Today, we will be going through DC Comics Presents #89. The episode begins with some Listener Feedback, followed by everyone’s favorite segment, Russell’s Comic Brag. (OK…I might be exaggerating!) Next, a Spotlight on Superman‘s Guest, The Omega Men. After that, we’ll get into our issue; DC Comics Presents #89. The show closes with a trip to the Comic Spinner Rack.

It’s good to hear you back at the microphone, Russell, and I look forward to hearing you on a more regular basis. I’ve enjoyed listening to your guest hosts, who have all done quite good jobs in your stead, but you’re “the guy”.
This episode was an interesting one for me, since, unlike just about every previous one, this covers an issue I hadn’t read back when it was originally published, so I don’t have an “of-the-time” perspective. I got a hint about who the Superman imposter might be from your synopsis (although that didn’t directly reveal his identity). Once you got into the issue itself in your page-by-page, I knew who it was! I hadn’t read “The Thing From 40,000 A.D.” when it was published in 1954, since I was still a couple of years from being born, but I read it in one of my older brothers’ comics a few years later, and recognized that shape-shifter from the fact that he was “reliving” that original story in this issue, putting himself in the place of Superman, and the Omega Men in the place of other characters in the story. Your description of him, in the form of Superman, as “a little bit more plump than the trim-looking Superman we’re used to in the Bronze Age” immediately brought to mind the Wayne Boring version of the Man of Steel. All in all, I thought this was a nice “homage” to Wayne Boring and that older adventure. I did find it amusing that, when the real Superman showed up, he said that he’d encountered “The Thing” “a few years ago”. C’mon, Superman! That was back in 1954, about 32 years before this story!

Also glad to hear your voice again! And I smiled when you started talking about Challenge. I was in a comic shop in Kentucky a few months ago when they had a couple of issues in the quarter bin, so I picked them up since I love to collect not only issues of my favorite series but also ‘oddball’ stuff. Then I looked into it and realized what it was, so I also started looking for them. Now, months later, I’ve managed to find all but #8. MyComicShop has it for $1.70, so if nothing else I’ll get it with my next monthly shipment of new comics. 🙂
I found your exchange with the feedback about pre-Crisis and the Crisis not being ‘needed’ interesting. I was basically out of comics during the Crisis and got back in during Batman Year Three after I heard on the news that Robin was dead. Even though I don’t consider myself a Batman fan today, I did have the pleasure of meeting
