Episode #73: Superman & The Flash
Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars: Battleworld Box Set
This time out, we’ll be getting into DC Comics Presents #73. The show starts with some Listener Feedback and I give an update for Facebook Page Likes and I-Tunes Rating. (Yes…I grovel for more email, comments and I-Tunes Reviews) Unfortunately, I had nothing to brag about this time. So there won’t be a Russell’s Comic Brag segment this time around. SORRY! We’ll have an update on the Spotlight for Superman’s Guests, The Flash. Next, we will delve into our issue, DC Comics Presents #73. Finally, we take a trip to the Comic Spinner Rack.

In answer to your “homework” question about how many times The Flash has appeared in this series, I have to split the difference and say that he’s made four cover appearances, but in three stories, since #1 and #2 are really a two-issue single story, as far as I’m concerned. No matter how many appearances he’s made, I always enjoy seeing Barry Allen, whom I regard as the Rob Petrie (of the old “Dick Van Dyke Show”) of DC’s Silver Age. He’s just a genuinely good guy who always seems to be having fun (although not so much fun during the Bronze Age, especially during his criminal trial).
It’s also always good to see the Phantom Zone Criminals as villains. Even with the limitations of being phantoms, they usually pose a serious threat, especially to Superman. It seems to me that, during the Silver Age, the “main” Phantom Zone villain was Jax-Ur, which makes sense, since he was Krypton’s biggest mass murderer, having destroyed an inhabited moon. In the Bronze Age and beyond, though, General Zod seemed to take over the role as the “Big Bad from the Phantom Zone”, probably due to his major role in 1978’s Superman: The Movie.
I’m looking forward to hearing about Superman’s adventure with Captain Marvel in DC Comics Presents Annual #3, presented by the first of your guest hosts, Ted Kilvington.

Personally, I see it as Flash has been in the book 3 times. That first time was a 2-part story, but 1 appearance.
Another good episode. Looking forward to see what your guests bring to the table. On to the annual!

Also, I would be interested in learning more about that Batman reprint. It sounds like they either are actually reprinting Batman #1, or are making a unique issue collecting those first stories mentioned in the ad. I haven’t been able to find much info about it though.
