Episode #59: Superman & The Legion Of Substitute Heroes

This time out, we’ll be getting into DC Comics Presents #59. We start this week’s episode with Listener Feedback. (and once again I grovel for more email and comments)  Next, we have a Spotlight on Superman’s Guests, The Legion Of Substitute Heroes.  Then, I will delve into our issue, DC Comics Presents #59.  Finally, we will take a trip to the Comic Spinner Rack.

  1. I loved he Legion of Substitute Heroes. Well, I love the earlier characterization of the team, when they were sometimes less capable than the regular Legion, but just as super-earnest, if not more. In fact, I think it was unreasonable of the Legion to reject Polar Boy, when his power is basically comparable to Sun Boy’s, just in the opposite direction. By this point in their publication history, the writers were pretty much treating the Subs as something of a joke, which I always thought was unfair to them.
You mentioned, near the end of the story, that the Subs’ headquarters looked like the original Legion of Super-Heroes Clubhouse. It was, indeed, the very same clubhouse. Years earlier, the Legion had built a new headquarters. In Superboy #211, cover-dated September, 1975, in the back-up story “The Legion’s Lost Home”, the Subs retrieved the original clubhouse from a scrapyard and refurbished it for their own headquarters.
